Az e hét végén Lousada-ban (P) tartandó EB-nyitó futamon egy újítással tesszük érdekesebbé a versenyt–mégpedig egy alternatív útvonal formájában. A Joker kör elnevezésű útvonal tulajdonképpen egy ráadás-szakasz. Hasonló ahhoz, mint amit a Svéd Bajnokságban is alkalmaztak, ahol is a verseny során egy körben (a sofőr taktikájától függően kiválaszthatja, hogy melyikben) minden vezetőnek használnia kell a pálya alternatív szakaszát. Az alternatív szakasz a normál pályaméretet meghosszabbítja, ami azt jelenti, hogy a verseny kimenetele az utolsó körig bizonytalan lesz. Ez azt is jelenti, hogy ha valakit feltartanak, és nem tudja lehagyni a lassabb autót, akkor használhatja a Joker kört. A vezető aztán bekapcsolódik a gyors körökbe, mielőtt az autó, amely eredetileg előtte volt, megteszi a lassabb utat. Ez több előzési lehetőséget biztosít, izgalmasabbá és kiszámíthatatlanabbá teszi a versenyt.

A lousadai pálya az első helyszín lesz az idei EB-n, ahol a Joker kört–ami Svédországban annyira bevált a vezetők körében–tesztelhetjük. Az új pályaszakasz a régi pálya bal széléből, egy kis bukkanóval ágazik ki–ezen a Div I-es autók akár még repülhetnek is egy pillanatig – rögtön a startvonal után. A pályaszakasz az eredeti pálya mellett, az első kanyar külső szélén fut, így tulajdonképpen egy "kétsávos" pályát képez, amelyen a verseny mint közelharc látható. Az alternatív útvonal az eredeti pályába akkor csatlakozik vissza, amikor az autók nekiindulnak az emelkedőnek a második kanyar után. Az új szakaszt jobban el sem helyezhettük volna, mivel így a közönség test közelből láthatja az akciókat.

This weekends opening round of the European Championship at Lousada in Portugal, will feature an exciting addition to the series in the form of an alternative route. Promoted as the "Joker Lap", the alternative route will add an extra dimension to the racing throughout the weekend. It is similar to what is used in the Swedish Rallycross Championship, where on one lap (the driver can choose which lap he does it depending on tactics) during the

race, each driver has to take the alternative section of track. The alternative section of track is longer than the normal circuit layout, meaning that it will leave the result of the race, uncertain until the final lap. It also means that if a driver is being held up by a car in front and cannot get past, then they can use the "Joker Lap". The driver can then put in a series of quick laps before the car that was originally in front of him takes the longer route. This provides more overtaking opportunities, increased excitement for the crowd and some unpredictability.

The Lousada circuit in Portugal, will become the first venue in the European Rallycross Championship to try out this format, something which has proved very popular with the drivers in Sweden. The new section of track branches off (featuring a small jump-maybe the Division one cars will become airborne for a split second) to the left of the circuit after the cars cross the startline and runs all the way around the outside of the first corner, providing a two lane type scenario in what could be seen as a "head to head" battle. Thealternative section of track, filters back into the original layout as the cars head up the hill into the second turn on the circuit. The location of the new alternative route could not have been positioned better, as it brings the crowd very close to the action. With it being located around the outside of the first turn the spectators will be in prime position to see the action unfold.
